No Invitation

To say I feel
sucker punched
is a gross exaggeration
and must be untrue
because
I can still stand
up straight
and smile
at the appropriate
moments
and present myself
with an appearance
that belies
the state of my mind
which is on the loose
again—
but still—
I’m trying to make sense
of how I could have
mistaken
the first few words
of your joke
for an invitation
to be near you
when they
were only meant
to make me laugh.
