Civil Disobedience

There is still time
to change my mind—
to stay on this side
of the pond
where I am safe
from temptation
and the kind of scenery
Henry David Thoreau
gave up everything for.
But I don’t want safe.
I don’t want predictable
to be the word that’s
written on my grave—
I want a selection of risks
on the buffet of delights
and I want to walk
into the woods knowing
I might be irreparably
changed by who I find
and what we do there—
and without hesitation
I will walk in anyway.

Painting by A.J. Casson, 1929 “Algoma”
