The Unfortunate Limits of Language

Words mean almost nothing
compared to the tone of your voice—
which is silent and as flat as your stomach
in that picture of you standing in the water.
If I could hear you speak those words just once
instead of reading them a thousand times
I might know what you meant—
if I could watch the way your body spoke
of the water you were swimming in
I might be able to decode the temperature
of your river – whether it ran hot or cold.
