Shared Spaces

Some people whistle
and infect the air
with a kind of abandon
I don’t understand.
I envy them
their inhibitions—
their disregard for others
who share the space
without an option
to turn down the volume
or change the station.
I wish my intrusions
were as innocent
as theirs.
All they want
is to enjoy their own music
and to share it with me—
who only knows
how impossible it is
to sound unkind—
or to mention how in love
I am with silence.

  1. I really enjoyed your poem envelops at the recent First Friday’s at Harrison Center for the Arts. I am the host of a featured poet/open mike at the Theater at the Fort on Indy’s East side and need a featured poet for September 27th. We meet from 6:30 – 8:30 and you could share your work for the first 30-45 minutes.
Let me know if you are interested, and if that date doesn’t work, I can suggest other months coming up.

    1. Hi Liza,

Thanks! I’m interested in sharing my work at your venue, but I’m not sure that date would work. I applied late to an art fair in Southern Indiana and am waiting to hear if they have room for me. Could you email me some other possible dates? My email is

      Thank you!
