The Lingering

Here we are now,
in the future.
We fast-forwarded
so much quicker than
I thought possible
and I can even say
that I’ve recovered
from the beauty
we denied ourselves.
I was so proud of us
for our virtue,
and the layer of clothes
we did not remove.
And no one but us
will know how close
we came to love—
that we touched it
so gently it could last
forever, without
the puncture wounds
of haste and time.
