When you’re a child

you expect that everything you need

will be provided,

which proves to be mostly true.

When you’re young – in love,

you expect that you will receive

the same things you give,

which is also mostly true.

When you’re racing from youth

to middle age

you must constantly remind yourself

that what you will receive

isn’t always wanted or deserved or fair

and that the first half of your life

hasn’t sufficiently prepped you for this

error of understanding

which will require you to spend

a good part of the rest  of your life

in puzzled amazement at your

infantile naiveté.
